Your Home for Faceted Classification Tools
Facetmap is both a data model and a software package, created to let users browse complex metadata while retaining a simple, familiar, menu interface.

Facetmap Gold Installation

  1. Install Java
  2. Install webserver
  3. Install MySQL
  4. Install Facetmap Gold
  5. Add your data

1. Install Java. If you already have Java installed on your computer, you can skip this step. If you don't, or if you're not sure, download and install the J2SE 1.4 SDK (not the JRE) from Sun's website at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html. (In case you're wondering, FacetMap will work with Java 1.3 or later.)

2. Install webserver. If you don't have a servlet container, get one and install it. J2EE is not required -- Tomcat serves Facetmap well.

3. Install MySQL and create a database for Facetmap to use. A new database is not necessary -- Facetmap can use the same database as other components in your app -- but Facetmap requires CREATE and DROP access to the database. We recommend you create a new user, and optionally a password, for Facetmap to use when accessing MySQL.

4. Install Facetmap Gold. Download facetmap.war and save it in the folder $TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/ (or the appropriate web app directory for your servlet container).

Unpack the web archive, or restart your webserver to automatically unpack it. If the webapp is started at this point, Facetmap will not initialize because the archive contains no license file. Save your license file into the WEB-INF directory as license.txt and restart the webserver.

5. Add your data, which is probably more interesting than the wine. Facetmap looks for its faceted data in the file $TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/facetmapgold/WEB-INF/map.xml . Replace that with your own data file (rename your file to map.xml), and restart the webserver.
